Team Leader & Advisor for DCA’s Private Sector & Market Systems Team

Then the newly created Team Leader& Advisor position for the Private Sector & Market Systems Team in DanChurchAid (DCA) in the Programme, Advocacy and Learning Unit (PAL) may be the right job for you.

DCA has a longstanding track record of engaging the private sector in innovative, strategic collaborations to form multistakeholder engagements and enable locally led solutions as a means to deliver on DCA’s global goals. The Team Leader will lead a team of five experts covering DCA’s work on strategic international partnerships, business & human rights, value chains, market systems, development finance, and climate change. The Team Leader will help advice and link together the different expert areas together with DCA’s other advisors, units, and country offices to strengthen programme and project quality. The team is one out of four in the Programme Advocacy and Learning (PAL) Unit, engaged in the strategic implementation of DCA’s Global Strategy 2023-2026.

In addition to being a Team Leader, the candidate will also serve as an Advisor on private sector development as a subject matter expert with the task of advising on high-quality country programming, policy development, capacity strengthening, and strategic fundraising as part of the PAL Unit’s overall mandate. The combined task for the Team Leader & Advisor is to drive forward DCA’s work on international strategic partnerships with the private sector, and actively support the programmatic work and expertise areas into country programming, policy and practice, and help document good practices from DCA’s work in countries.

The successful candidate for this job is both a kick-starter and a finisher, being committed to delivering innovative solutions and high-quality programmatic results from a market systems development approach. The ideal candidate will lead through nurturing an organisational culture of co-creation, innovation, and learning. The position will develop evidence on proof-of-concepts and models for strengthening inclusive and green market systems that can help deliver on the SDGs and global climate ambitions in a responsible manner in development and humanitarian settings from a “just transition” perspective.

The position will be based at DCA’s Headquarter. Some travel is expected in this position to DCA countries and global advocacy and network events, but not extensive travel periods.

A global leadership course is offered to all team leaders as part of DCA’s focus on leadership development and competence development (when courses are made available).

Key tasks and responsibilities:

Staff management and strategic leadership in DCA (40%):

  • Manage and coordinate a team of advisors (annual plan, work plans, EDR/MUS, team meetings, 1:1 meetings, etc)
  • Manage and coordinate the team’s projects and budgets
  • Coordinate and liaise with Head of Unit and teams in PAL, other HQ units, departments, and Country Offices
  • Manage stakeholder engagements, build, and sustain partner relations and alliances as part of implementing DCA’s global strategy across the organisation

Advisor on private sector development (60%):

  • Ensure programmatic quality and strategic delivery on private sector development in DCA programmes and projects as part of DCA’s global strategy and PAL’s mandate
  • Ensure due diligence and compliance in DCA systems and procedures in alignment with international standards and DCA’s policies when engaging private sector to manage and mitigate risks (programmatic, financial, human rights, environmental risks)
  • Link DCA’s private sector engagement with other DCA intervention areas and fields of expertise (human rights, gender, climate and environment, religion and development, civic space, tech & human rights, localisation, triple nexus, etc)
  • Facilitate and lead strategic fundraising efforts and pipeline development on strategic areas in coordination with GPRM and Country Offices linked to private sector-driven fundraising instruments (e.g. Danida Green Business Partnerships)
  • Ensure good project management of private sector and DK stakeholder engagement projects to ensure that donor reports are timely and of high quality
  • Advance DCA’s efforts on promoting responsible business conduct in programmes, projects, and advocacy work
  • Accelerate DCA’s ambitions on developing blended, green finance solutions as part of a broader market systems development and value chain approach
  • Work closely with DCA’s senior innovation advisor and country teams on scaling up innovative solutions to blended finance and impact business solutions
  • Facilitate critical reflections, capacity sharing, and learning processes between DCA HQ, country offices, partners, and stakeholders.

As the Team Leader and Advisor, you will keep yourself, your team, and the organisation abreast of new trends in the Danish and global stakeholder landscape related to private sector development, innovative partnerships, market systems development, blended and innovative finance, climate change, and responsible business conduct through knowledge sharing with team experts, partners and networks.

Key Competencies:

  • Experience with staff management and strategic leadership
  • Expertise in the field of private sector development and stakeholder management both in a Danish and international context
  • Understanding of working with a human rights-based approach to development and implementation of programmes and projects in line with organisational cross-cutting policies and international standards (international human rights and international humanitarian law, more specifically the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights)
  • Documented experience from project implementation and grants management in accordance with donor guidelines from institutional donors such as the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs/DANIDA, EU, US donors, private philanthropic funds, and green/climate funds
  • Experience from working in a development and humanitarian settings, preferably with country experience
  • Above all, this person is a strong team player, a people person, and an excellent communicator both verbally and in writing

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in relevant fields (social sciences, international development, business management, finance, law, etc)
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience managing teams and programmes with demonstrated leadership skills
  • Fluency in both English and Danish is a requirement, since the position will engage actively in stakeholder management and partnership liaison in a Danish stakeholder landscape.
